Maths:

Y5 – Now you have mastered using a protractor, we are going to look at some angle questions which you need to use known facts, rather than a protractor, to solve. Read the ‘Angles and Straight Lines Explanation Sheet’ uploaded below and then choose your challenge: A, B or C. Remember the short date and the title: Angles and Straight Lines.

Y6 – Continue and complete your maths work on addition and subtraction revision. Don’t forget there are also some related online quizzes to complete, if you finish the uploaded questions.  Well done Olly, Arlo and Harry, I see you have completed all the quizzes already!  I have assigned another mixed SATs revision quiz in case you need it, but don't feel you have to complete it - it is just an optional extension task.

Reading:

Y5 – Read chapter 13 of ‘Good Night Mr Tom’.

  • How does Willie get more into the role of Scrooge at the beginning of chapter 13?  Explain your answer.
  • How did Willie know that Tom was feeling shy at choir practise? Use evidence from page 158 to support your ideas.
  • Write down any unfamiliar/ambitious words from this chapter.  Research their meaning using a dictionary or computer, write a definition of each and write your own sentences containing each of your chosen words.

Record your answers in your English book.  Remember the long date and the title: Good Night Mr Tom - Chapter 13.

Y6 – Follow the link below and complete the comprehension task in your English book. Remember the long date and the title: Reading Comprehension – Boudicca.

Y5/6 Topic - Florence Nightingale:

As it is the 200th anniversary Of Florence Nightingale’s birth today, I thought we would do some Florence Nightingale related activities, before we move onto our new topic tomorrow.

Probably the most famous nurse ever known, Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy English family on 12th May 1820 and studied nursing in London.

In 1854 she was asked to take a team of nurses out to Scutari to nurse the wounded soldiers from the Crimean War, after newspapers reported that many soldiers were dying there due to lack of equipment, doctors, nurses and medical supplies. She was met with horrific conditions when she arrived at the hospital and Florence made it her mission to clean and organise the wards.

Her intervention led to a massive reduction in death rates and she was given the nickname ‘The Lady with the Lamp,’ because she used to go on her rounds of the hospital each night alone, carrying a lamp. Florence spent the rest of her life campaigning for social reform and transforming hospitals and nursing.

Today she is one of the most famous and revered women in the world and the new, temporary, critical care hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients in England are named ‘The NHS Nightingale Hospitals’ after her.

Read the PowerPoint and complete the linked activities. The PowerPoint will give you some more background information and explain what you need to do for each activity.  There is no need to print the sheets out.  You can record your work in your topic books.  Remember the long date and the title: Florence Nightingale

Y5/6 English:

For your English work today, I would like you to choose a text type of your choice e.g. poem, interview, fact sheet, narrative etc and create a short piece about Florence Nightingale.  Please send me your creations to headteacher@netherseal.derbyshire.sch.uk
