Our Curriculum in Reception and Year 1 (Class 3)
For Reception children the curriculum is largely play-based but includes opportunities for more direct learning as children are taught reading, writing and number skills. In Year 1 the curriculum builds on the Early Years curriculum as children begin to follow the National Curriculum. For children in Year 1, teaching and learning becomes more teacher-directed.
The curriculum in both year-groups is topic-based and is carefully-arranged over two cycles (see below) to take account of mixed-age groupings.
A mathematics lesson & a literacy lesson take place daily. There is also a daily phonics session using the Letters & Sounds scheme. Our main reading schemes are Oxford Reading Tree & Read, Write Inc.
A wide range of additional activities such as theatre trips and visits to places of interest linked to current curriculum topics, visits by poets and authors, whole-school maths days, whole-school science days and so on all contribute to a rich and varied curricular experience.
